Dziesmiņa 03:47
Dziesmiņ, manu mīļo dziesmiņ! Ar dziesmiņ’ mani sagaidīja, Ar dziesmiņ’ mani pavadīs, Ar dziesmiņ’ saule uzlēkusi, Ar dziesmiņ’ lēca mēnestiņš. Dziesmiņ’ dziedāj’ tēvs, māmiņa, Ar dziesmiņ’ cēlos rītiņā, Ar dziesmiņ’ ņēmu līgaviņ, Ar dziesmiņ’ māsiņ’ tautiņās. ------------------------------------------------------ SONG Song, my sweet song! They awaited me with a song, They’ll see me off with a song, The sun rose with a song, The moon rose with a song. My mum and dad always sang, I rose with a song in the morning, I sang as I took my bride, My sister sang as she grew.

Sniedziņš sniga, sniga putināja, Mēs ar līgaviņu kamanās. Vilku, vilku svārkus no muguras, Sedzu, sedzu savu mīļoto. Salti pūta ziemas vēji, Tāli tautu tīrumiņi. Dārgi mani svārki bija, Vēl dārgāka līgaviņ‘. Tumšā naktī, naktī sniegi sniga, Braucām garu, garu, garu ceļ‘. Kādi velni, velni trejdeviņi ------------------------------------------------------------------ Cold Blew The Winds of Winter The snow fell, filled the air, I rode a sleigh with my bride. I pulled the coat from off my back, And put it around her shoulders. Cold blew the winds of winter, Far and wide were the fields. Dear was the coat I gave her, Not as dear as she was to me. It snowed on a dark, dark night, The road was long and winding. What devils, what devils, I pray, Made us come out here tonight?

Vecaistēvs 04:09
Vecaistēvs, kad mežā brauca, Iesabozies kažokā, Čīkst kamanas, zviedz kumeļš, Laida pats gavilēs. Veci vīri nomiruši, Vārdi vien palikuši. Vecātēva sirmā bārda Zem ozola sabirus’; Kažociņu vien atrada Pažobelē salocīt’. ------------------------------------------ Grandfather When grandfather rode into the woods, With a long fur coat The sleigh creaked, the horse neighed, As he shouted with joy. Grey horses ate oats, Their backs arched, Old men drank beer, Their beards quivering. The old men have died, Their words are all that’s left. Granddad’s grey beard Scattered below an oak-tree His coat is all they found Under the canopy

Ieviņa 03:10
Ieva, ieva, ieva, ieviņa ziedus sarietuse, Gaida, gaida, gaida pilna, pilna mēnestiņa. Tautas, tautas, tautas zirgus, zirgus saseglojušas, Gaida, gaida, manu māsiņ’, māsiņ’ uzaugami. Vārna, vāra, vārna mietu, mietu notupēja Siltu, siltu vasariņu, vasariņu gaidīdama. Puiši, puiši, puiši zirgus, zirgus nojādīja, Manu mazo, mazo māsiņ’, māsiņ’, precēdami. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Eve / My Bird-Cherry Tree Eve, Eve, Eve, my bird-cherry tree in bloom, Waiting, waiting, waiting for a full moon. The folk, the folk, the folk saddled, saddled their horses, Waiting, waiting for my sister, for my sister to bloom. A crow, a crow, a crow sat, sat on a pole Waiting, waiting, for a warm summer, for summer. The boys, the boys, the boys rode, rode their horses without rest, Hoping to wed my, my little sister.

Meitiņas dancoja, pakaļas bungoja, Es līdzi skatījos, kurpītes čīkstēja. Kur tu, skuķēn, mēslus meti, Kad slaucīji istabiņ’? Man nokrita zelta pieši, Ar meitiņām runājot. Deju, deju, lecu, lecu, Kurpītēs, zilenēs, Puisīti gribēdama, Kas dancoja zābakos. Danco, puisīt, cik tu gribi, Neplēs manu lindraciņ’; Es tev došu, cik gribēsi, Kad māmiņa neredzēs. Nevienami tā nerīb Kā mums abiem dancojot; Man nokrita zelta pieši, Tev sidraba ķelderīš’. Meitiņas dancoja, pakaļas bungoja. Es līdzi skatījos, zābaki čīkstēja. -------------------------------------------------- The Maids Danced The maids danced and swung their hips, My shoes creaked as I watched. Where’d you throw the dung, little girl, After you swept the rooms? I must’ve dropped my golden spurs, Talking with the girls. I danced and danced, and hopped and hopped, In my new shoes and blue socks, I’ve got my eye on a boy, Dancing in leather boots. Dance, my boy, to your heart’s content, Be careful not to rip my dress; I’ll give you what you ask, When my mother’s not around. No one makes the floors creak, As do we when we take to dancing; I dropped my golden spurs, You dropped your silver coat. Dance, my boy, to your heart’s content, Be careful not to rip my dress; I’ll give you what you ask, When my mother’s not around. The maids danced and swung their hips, My boots creaked as I watched.

Dzer, puisīt, alu, dzer, cik tev tīk. Tīk mani ņemt, ņem, cik tev tīk. Ja tu mani neņemsi, tad pieminēsi, Es tevi piesiešu pie sētas mieta. Nodilsi, nonīksi kā sētas mietiņš, Mūžam tu paliksi bez līgaviņas. -------------------------------------------------------- Drink You Bear, Boy Drink your beer, boy, drink your fill. If it’s me you like, take me too. You’ll regret it, if you don’t, I’ll tie you to a stake in the field. There you’ll wither and fade away, Forever without a bride.

Čučutango 03:28
Tu meitiņa virsū guli, Es gulēšu apakšā; Es uz dievu raudzījos, Tu ellē skatījies. Tu, meitiņ, mana pirmā brūte biji, Tu man gaužām žēl darīji; Dienu tu man prātā stāvi, Naktī sapņos rādījies. Ko teic niekus tu, puisīti, Ka es tava brūte bij’; Cita puiša brūte biju, Tu pēc manis noraudāj’. ----------------------------------------------- A young maid walked down a path Chaste in the eyes that watched her Cold and wet She sang as she walked The winds howled in the trees The people spoke among themselves. The river ran quick How do they know? Foaming red. How do they know? Cut down an ash tree, lad And throw the wood on the fire There’s a young maid approaching Shivering at your door.
8.
Straujupīte 03:23
Jauna meita kaunu glāba Rokā nesa vainadziņ’. Samirkusi, sasalusi, Tek pa ceļu dziedādam’. Vēji brāzās, koki šalca, Ļaudis ņēma valodās. Teci, teci, straujupīt! Kā gan viņi zin? Sarkanām putiņāmi. Kā gan viņi zin’? Cērt, brālīti, oša malku, Kurin’ siltu istabiņ’. Re, kur nāk jauna meita Sasalusi sētiņā. ----------------------------------------------- The River Run Quick A young maid walked down a path Chaste in the eyes that watched her Cold and wet She sang as she walked The winds howled in the trees The people spoke among themselves. The river ran quick How do they know? Foaming red. How do they know? Cut down an ash tree, lad And throw the wood on the fire There’s a young maid approaching Shivering at your door.

Ansītis 03:01
Ai, ai, Ansīti, tev ir karsta sirde, Cik diža mušiņa, tu lēci virsū. Ai, ai, Ansīti, tavu lielu rīku, No zirga lēkdams sagāzi sētu. Krancītis rēja, Ansītis jāja, Meitiņai istaba neslaucīta. Krancītis rēja, Ansītis jāja, Gardi smējās mēnestiņ’. Ai, ai, Ansīti, tavu kārum lielu, Cik diža mušiņa, tu lēci virsū. ----------------------------------------------- Oh, oh, Ansīti, your heart is blazing, You sprang on top like a fly. Oh, oh, Ansīti, what a tool you’ve got, You broke the fence as you hopped off your horse. The dog barked, Ansītis rode, The lassie’s room needs sweeping. The dog barked, Ansītis rode, The moon spun laughing. Oh, oh, Ansīti, what a delight you’ve got, You sprang on top like a fly.

Laumas Meita 03:31
Re, kur brauca Laumas meita Ar iejūgtu kumeliņ‘. Melns krauklītis kumeliņš, Zalkša pīta pātadziņa Drebi, drebi, drebi apšu lapa, Kas jel tevi, tevi drebināja? Laumas meita drebināja, Kam nedevi naktī mājas? Mēnestiņa, mēnestiņa, Vai mēs tavi ienaidnieki? ------------------------------------------- Witch's Daughter Lo’, there rides witches’ daughter Her horse strapped and saddled. That horse is as black as crow, Her whip woven like a ringed snake. Shiver, shiver, shiver leaf of an aspen tree, What, pray tell, made you shiver so? Witch’s daughter made me shiver, Why didn’t you spare her shelter for the night? Moon, Moon, Were we your enemies?

Aiz jūriņas augsti kalni, Tur sarkanas ogas aug. Vidū jūras zelta ņiedra, Zelta gultas galiņā. Tur stāv divi sirmi zirgi, Abi divi apseglot’. Tur guļ divi karavīri, Abi divi apbruņot. Aiz jūriņas augsti kalni, Tur sarkanas ogas aug. Vidū jūras zelta ņiedra, Zelta gultas galiņā. Tur guļ divi karavīri Abi divi apbruņot’; Viegli cēlās no gultiņas, Viegli lēca kumeļā. Tālu, tālu, aiz jūriņas, Pērkonītis ducināja. Tālu, tālu, aiz jūriņas. Aiz jūriņas augsti kalni, Tur sarkanas ogas aug. Vidū jūras zelta ņiedra, Zelta gultas galiņā. Tur stāv divi sirmi zirgi, Abi divi apseglot’. Tur guļ divi karavīri, Abi divi apbruņot’. ----------------------------------- The mountains are high beyond the sea, Red berries grow there. A golden sea-reed lay in the middle, At the foot of a golden bed. Two grey steeds stand there, Both of them saddled. Two soldiers lay there, Both of them armoured. Two soldiers lay there Both of them armoured; They got up lightly from the bed, And lightly mounted the horses. Far, far, beyond the sea, The thunder rolled. Far, far, beyond the sea. The mountains are high beyond the sea, Red berries grow there. A golden sea-reed lay in the middle, At the foot of a golden bed.

Kur tu ņēmi to dziesmiņu, Kas actiņas slapināj’? Kur tu ņēmi to vārdiņu, Kas tik žēli sirdī skan? To vārdiņu izdzirdēju Viņpus upes tautiņās, Kā pērlītes to savēru Savā dziesmu kamolā. Visas dziesmas izdziedātas, Ir valodas izrunātas, Sien pie durvīm kumeliņu, Lai es sēdu mugurā. -------------------------------------------- WHERE’D YOU GET THAT SONG Where’d you get that song, That brings tears to my eyes? Where’d you get that word, That rings so sad in my heart? I heard that word From the folk beyond the river; I strung the words like pearls In a ball of song. All the songs have been sung, All the talk has been spoken, Tie a horse by the door, So that I may ride.

about

JJO albumā Ieviņa (2018) iekļautas 12 dziesmas, balstītas latviešu tautasdziesmu četrrindēs, to unikālajā pantmērā un raksturā.

The new studio album Ieviņa (Eve / The Bird-Cherry Tree) consists of 12 new songs based on traditional Latvian quatrain verses, which feature a unique spoken rhythm and spirit. The songs tell different stories about the curious ways in which human relationships unfold. Full of love and affection, sorrow and joy these motives are old and common, yet always new and unique for those living them.
Modern and traditional acoustic instruments, especially strings, electronic sounds and different vocal colors seemed to us to be the right way to connect tradition with creative freedom.
